“As I process my latest book- PERIPHERAL VIEW: SOUL SONGS FOR THE STROBE LIGHT GENERATION 2020-2025 – published in December 2025 with some distance I can see a bit of JACK KEROUAC’s -Mexico City Blues – in its flow, but more rock and roll than jazz in its essence,. But i def can hear and feel a little of the jazz in the music of its raw stream of word flow, and with it being very in the now moment . Perhaps, rock jazz? This is all unintentional but I can see something mystical now in common with THOMAS MERTON’s – Wisdom Of The Desert – a little bit as well. It is so much more than the hungry skeleton of our culture, or co-opted by big money corporations governments here and globally propaganda. It is searching for truth and hope. Parts of my latest book are also like a simple church hymn book, with a pure, non-ego descent into GOD within, and in awe of GOD in silence,” said Billy Lamont today.

The Alternative began on New Year’s Day in 1995, and quickly became one of the most popular events on the city’s poetry and literary scene. It was originally conceived and organized by founder Bruce Weber, who kept the event running at various lower Manhattan venues for many years. For the 2020 event and since, Bruce passed the baton to Pete Dolack, who now serves as the event’s coordinator, ably assisted by a staff of writers, designers and curators. The Alternative, which continues to be free to the public, features poets, prose writers, monologists, musicians, dancers and other performers in an eight-hour showcase that ranges from some of New York’s most seasoned talents to emerging stars. More than 150 performers are scheduled every year.
